Scottish History

Scotland's worldwide image may be associated with whisky, bagpipes, haggis and highland games - but its history offers much more than that. Like Wales and Ireland, this proud nation has had a complex relationship with its larger neighbour, England, one which has historically been based on mistrust but also on alliances. Joined to England by the Union of the Crowns in 1603 and the Union of the Parliaments a century later, Scotland has achieved a significant measure of develoution and may be heading towards independence.

Looking closely at Scotland's history gives an understanding of its individual character, based in traditions and laws which have existed separately from those in England for centuries - and which remain distinct to this day.
