The desert kingdom of Saudi Arabia typifies the sharp contrasts that are found in the Middle East.
Just a short generation ago, its people were mostly nomadic tent-dwellers. They now live in ultra-modern cities served by a huge force of foreign nationals. Oil, found there in huge quantities, has produced this fabulous wealth. But the country is ruled by a system of Islamic law in which medieval punishments are regularly meted out and women are segregated, confined,and denied the vote.
