Religion & War

Can religion and religious differences always be blamed for war? Like the Crusades of the 11th, 12th and 13th centuries, are most Holy Wars really driven by spiritual and religious beliefs, or does that seem to be a contradiction? Surely mass killing and destruction cannot further the cause of holiness and spirituality. During World War Two, both the English and German troops prayed to the same God for victory over their enemies. Before the invasion of Iraq, both George Bush and Saddam Hussein invoked the assistance of God to help their cause.

How can extremists commit terrible atrocities in the name of God?
