New Orleans & Dixieland
The "Big Easy." Crescent City. The French Quarter. Basin Street. Legendary names, all pointing to "Nawlins," the birthplace of jazz, home of the instantly recognizable Dixieland style.
Trumpets state the obvious (then punctuate it with the not-so-obvious), clarinets soar and swoop, trombones add another perspective, tubas or basses bringing the sound back to earth. The Dixieland sound is cacophonic and jubilant, a collision of brass bands, French Quadrilles, ragtime, blues, and an "on your mark - get set - go" style of collective improvisation. Ever since the Original Dixieland Jazz Band sold a million records in 1917; ever since Satchmo picked up a trumpet and changed the sound of jazz, Dixieland has sounded in the the streets of New Orleans and around the world.
