Muscles and the tendons by which they are attached to bones are the pulleys for body movement. Muscle strains, also known as the pulling of a muscle, occur during participation in sports from overstretching or overcontraction of the muscle. Muscle strains occur when there are small tears in the muscle fibres and a muscle is described as torn where a large portion of the muscle fibres are involved. Overuse can also lead to muscle and ligament injuries such shin splints and tendonitis (inflammation of a tendon).
Fitness training and attention to stretching as well as warming up and cooling down after exercise are key to the prevention of injury to muscles during sport.
