The tiny sliver of land known as Israel is an anomaly in the Middle Eastern region. With a population of 7.5 million and an area only slightly larger than New Jersey, Israel draws a huge amount of attention from the world's media and from the United Nations.

Formed in 1948 from a small portion of the British Mandate for Palestine, intended as a homeland for the persecuted Jewish people, Israel has faced violent opposition ever since. With 76% of its population being of Jewish ethnicity and religion, the prosperous democracy of Israel stands in contrast to the Muslim-majority states of the Middle East.
