Glam Rock
Glam Rock emerged in the early 1970s in England. In many ways the musical style (often simplified and focusing on catchy melodies) was less important than the image. Sexually androgynous appearances and characterizations were the norm. Glam rock was all about the look and the swagger.
Artists like T. Rex may have started the glam rock movement (although it could be argued that it was David Bowie) but many others followed like Sweet, Gary Glitter and Roxy Music. Even the New York Dolls (who some call the first glam rock band) that became linked to the punk rock movement, found their roots in glam rock. In the 1980s a type of heavy metal (called "hair metal" by many) sprang from glam rock.
