One of the most revolutionary scientific concepts ever put forth is the theory of evolution. While Charles Darwin is most often remembered as the man who first promulgated this theory in 1859, fellow British naturalist Alfred Wallace independently put forth his own theory of evolution at the same time as Darwin.
Since then, the concept of evolution has been a source of often acrid philosophical, scientific, and religious debate. While scientists continue to debate aspects of evolution, such as the rates, mechanisms, and results, the concept is a central and crucial aspect of biology and paleontology.
