Edwardian History

The Edwardian era was short, lasting for less than a decade between the death of Queen Victoria in 1901 and the accession of George V in 1910. Realistically, however, this time of opulence and empire can be considered to extend a little longer than the reign of Edward VIII and may be considered to have concluded with the apocalyptic visions produced by the First World War.

The period was characterised by the beginnings of social change. Although the rich still enjoyed their notorious house parties, there were stirrings for change, most notably the campaign for female suffrage. And Britain's military and imperial standing in the world began to be challenged - symbolised, perhaps, by the Captain Scott's defeat in the Race to the Pole.
